Maya Equihua serves as a Research and Policy Fellow at LULAC’s national office in Washington DC. She is proud to come from a family of Mexican immigrants and calls La Habra, California home. She is a rising senior at Wellesley College where she is pursuing a double major in Political Science and American Studies. At school she is involved in The Agora Society, Political Scientists of Color and Political Science Majors Council. Outside of Wellesley, she is an active member of MIT Club Volleyball and an ESL teacher through Phillips Brooks House Association. She has experience working as a tutor to recently arrived youth, and as a legal assistant in an immigration law firm. Last summer she interned at the Democratic Party of Orange County and there she conducted research on Latino voters to assist campaigns in securing votes. She looks forward to expanding her passion for increasing Latino civic engagement next year as she writes her thesis on Spanish language accessibility in local politics. She plans to continue her advocacy for immigration and civil rights as an attorney or policy maker in the years to come. She is excited to join LULAC and looks forward to making a meaningful contribution to her community through research.
