Resolution in Support of HB152 calling for Expanding Driver Permit Language

WHEREAS, 84 years ago, the founders of the League of Latin American Citizens, (LULAC) joined together to establish an organization that would become the largest, oldest and successful Hispanic civil rights and service organization in the United States, and

WHEREAS, when applying for a Texas Driver Permit, the Texas Legislature is considering a bill that will expand the acceptable identification documents to include government documents issues by another country so long as they include the applicant’s photograph, full name, and date of birth. These documents could not include a passport, a consular identity document, or a national identity document that complies with federal law, and

WHEREAS, the expanded language would allow undocumented persons to get driver permits, regardless of their legal status, upon completing their application an fulfilling permit requirements. They would then be able to drive their vehicles to and from work without receiving tickets, possible arrest, or possible deportation. Dallas Representative Roberto Alonzo is the author of HB 152, and

WHEREAS, expanded driving permits would allow undocumented persons to drive in Texas without fear of being stopped and given driving citations, and

WHEREAS, undocumented persons often have to drive great distances to work and are unable to secure alternate transportation, and

WHEREAS, all persons, regardless of their legal status, must work to support and provide for themselves and their families, and

WHEREAS, undocumented persons would then be able to purchase automobile insurance to be able to drive and comply with the financial responsibility requirements, and

BE IT RESOLVED, that LULAC District VII supports passage of HB 152 as written by State Representative Roberto Alonzo to make our Texas streets and roads safe
