Resolution on Establishment of a Department of Peace in California

WHEREAS, 84 years ago, the founders of the League of Latin American Citizens, (LULAC) joined together to establish an organization that would become the largest, oldest and successful Hispanic civil rights and service organization in the United States, and

WHEREAS, LULAC advocates for safety and well-being of but not exclusively Hispanics across the United States and beyond , and

WHEREAS, given the grief the use of violence causes those who are its victims , and

WHEREAS, given the unbelievable cost of violence to the people of our country-approximately 508 billion a year in treatment, loss of productivity and burden on the criminal justice system , and

WHEREAS, given the fact that most problems in our society that are energetically and thoughtfully can be alleviated , and

WHEREAS, given the need for society in general to create a ground swell of support towards the very end, reducing violence , and

BE IT RESOLVED, that LULAC calls on the Governor of the State of Texas and to include the House and Senate to pass a resolution requesting the United States Congress to establish a Department of Peace with the Secretary of that Department filling a place on the cabinet in the executive branch of the federal government , and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we call upon our Representatives in the United States Congress to co-sponsor the bill to establish a Department of Peace which can be done through the Office of Representative Barbara Lee (CA- 13) , and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that we direct our Texas LULAC State Secretary to forward a copy of this resolution to the members of the United States Congress who represents our membership
