Resolution on Opposition to California AB 955

WHEREAS, 84 years ago, the founders of the League of Latin American Citizens, (LULAC) joined together to establish an organization that would become the largest, oldest and successful Hispanic civil rights and service organization in the United States, and

WHEREAS, LULAC is a national civil rights organization dedicated to the equitable treatment of all citizens and residents of the community, and our mission is to advance the educational attainment, economic condition, healt civil rights, and political empowerment of the Hispanic population of the United States , and

WHEREAS, California Assembly Bill 955 calls for significant increases in tuition for specific classes in California Community Colleges , and

WHEREAS, the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, an organization representative of community college students, has voiced strong opposition to this legislation, and stated it would only benefit “students with money” , and

WHEREAS, this legislation can cause extreme hardship upon students who can barely pay for college under existing tuition fees , and

WHEREAS, this legislation will cause students to leave college due to their inability to pay new fees , and

WHEREAS, LULAC has a duty and responsibility to protect the Latino community against this overreaching and detrimental legislation

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the California LULAC do hereby urge the Governor of the State of California and our State Senate to defeat AB 955 , and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, California LULAC State Director shall forward a copy of this resolution to the Governor of California and Representatives in the State Senate and Assembly
