Resolution on Student Loans Fairness Act

WHEREAS, 84 years ago, the founders of the League of Latin American Citizens, (LULAC) joined together to establish an organization that would become the largest, oldest and successful Hispanic civil rights and service organization in the United States, and

WHEREAS, higher education is one of LULAC’s highest values and the organization is concerned about the increasing costs of college and universities and the burden this places on working people’s children aspiring for a better life, and

WHEREAS, the student’s loan debt has reached a 1 trillion dollar level and the average loan debt has more than doubled to $26,000, and

WHEREAS, the student loan interest is to go up to 6.89% by July, yet the interest charged the big banks is only 0.75%

WHEREAS, the Wall Street banks were responsible for wrecking the economy – not the college students who are the future of our country’s economy, and

WHEREAS, college students deserve no less treatment from the Federal Reserve than that given to Wall Street, and

BE IT RESOLVED, THAT THE NEW MEXICO LEAGUE OF UNITED LATIN AMERICAN CITIZENS URGE THE US CONGRESS TO PASS SB-897
