Resolution to Name the New Veteran Medical Facility in Austin, Texas

WHEREAS, 84 years ago, the founders of the League of Latin American Citizens, (LULAC) joined together to establish an organization that would become the largest, oldest and successful Hispanic civil rights and service organization in the United States, and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Roy Benavidez distinguished himself with a series of daring action on May 2, 1968 in the Vietnam War; and

WHEREAS, On that date in a dense jungle west of the Loc Ninh Sgt. Benavidez volunteered to assist and help in another extraction of the special forces team that were wounded or dead; and

WHEREAS, Despite his severe wounds and under an intense enemy fire he carried and dragged half of the wounded team members to the awaiting aircraft; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Benavidez refused to be stopped despite 37 severe wounds and saved at least 8 men that day. Hi extraordinary courage and risk to his life reflects great credit to himself and the armed forces of this country; and

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Texas league of United Latin American citizens supports naming the new veteran medical facility in Austin, TX In honor of Master sergeant Roy Benavidez
