Mariachi Flor de Toloache

Flor de Toloache

For as much as Flor de Toloache exhibit the utmost reverence for Mariachi, the Latin GRAMMY® Award-winning and two-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated duo—Mireya Ramos and Shae Fiol—also reconstruct, reinvent, and reimagine it with a rebellious spirit befitting of the artform’s very origins.

This spirit has carried them from marathon performances in dimly lit New York restaurants and now-legendary impromptu subway shows to lighting up NPR Music’s “Tiny Desk” and playing the steps of The White House. It’s why everyone from Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys to John Legend has jumped at the chance to collaborate with them. It’s why they shine so brightly on their own music, covers, or inventive mash-ups (which have spanned the gamut from Nirvana to Justin Timberlake).

It’s also the reason the group has emerged as a cultural force of nature. In 2008, Mireya approached Shae with the initial idea of creating NYC’s first all female mariachi that would become Flor De Toloache. The group grinded at community events, birthday parties, quinceañeras, and restaurants. Early gigs at Rockwood Music Hall stoked buzz.

That excitement literally surged through New York City. Shae and Mireya quit their respective day jobs and opted to perform for three hours at a time on subway platforms in Grand Central Station, in Times Square, and Union Square resulting in a feature on the Daily News followed by the New York Times and many more other major media outlets.

In 2014, the group served up their first full-length LP, Mariachi Flor de Toloache. Not long after, they joined forces with Auerbach on The Arcs’ debut, Yours, Dreamily, appearing on six tracks and touring together. Flor de Toloache took flight on 2017’s Las Caras Lindas, receiving a Latin GRAMMY® Award in the category of “Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album.” 2019 saw them deliver Indestructible highlighted by duets with John Legend, Miguel, and Alex Cuba. It even garnered a GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of “Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album.” The 2022 follow-up Motherflower notably earned a GRAMMY®nomination for “Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano).” KCRW spotlighted the single “Una Vida Y Otra Más” as “Today’s Top Tune.”

Followed by one of the most personal albums as of yet, their fifth album “Motherflower” of all original songs depicting their experiences as women in the music industry and overall their life experience in unapologetic and satirical way giving you their most experimental musical expression. Their fifth album “Motherflower” was nominated for a Grammy in 2024 making them the only independent band to be in the category of Best Album de Música Mexicana. Along the way, they graced the stages of Coachella and Osheaga in addition to performances on KEXP, Austin City Limits, and PBS, among others. Not to mention, they incited the applause of Pitchfork, Billboard, Oprah Magazine, and more. Plus, they celebrated Linda Ronstadt with a powerhouse performance at the Kennedy Center Honors. They continued to pave a path of their own with a distinct alchemy.

In the end, Flor de Toloache will continue to show who they are by continuing to blend all types of genres seamlessly and inspire in the process, an important reason why Flor de Toloache is truly unique and is move through different worlds easily connecting with a variety of audiences.
