The Big Lie aka La Gran Mentira | Second Edition
On March 18, 2026, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and Democracy Defenders Action released the second edition of The Big Lie aka La Gran Mentira: Exposing Anti-Immigrant Election Lies, originally published during the 2024 election. This updated report takes a clear-eyed look at a disinformation campaign built on false claims about immigrants and voting. The goal is simple. Expose the lie before it takes hold again, undermines trust in the next election, and sets the stage to challenge the outcome no matter the result.
The report lays out the facts. The law already prohibits ineligible voting, backed by serious penalties and a system of layered safeguards at the state and federal level. The data is just as clear. Investigations, audits, and independent research all point to the same conclusion: the number of ineligible immigrants registering or voting is minuscule, with no meaningful impact on election outcomes.
But the lie persists because it serves a purpose. This report traces how it spread, who is pushing it, and how new proposals like the SAVE Act and SAVE America Act would place real burdens on eligible voters while chasing a problem that does not exist.
For the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), this is not abstract. For nearly a century, we have fought to secure the right to vote for Latinos who are U.S. citizens. We have seen this before. Claims of fraud used to justify new barriers, rules that fall hardest on our communities, and efforts that quietly shrink participation. This report lays out what is true and what is at stake.
