Army Master Sergeant Roy P. Benavidez

Dear LULAC Familia,

At our National Convention in Milwaukee, we unanimously passed a resolution that can change history in our country. LULAC members said ya es tiempo! It’s time --- to honor a true American Texas hero, Army Master Sergeant Roy P. Benavidez. Now, I need your help to make it happen.

The story of what he experienced and did in combat in Vietnam stirs us all with pride of how courageous our soldiers are even in the face of death. Please go to this link and listen to the late President Ronald Reagan share the account of Sgt. Benavidez’bravery on the battlefield (Starts at 9:30).

Every time I hear it, I am moved with emotion. Here was a man who saved 8 men by taking them to a helicopter while under heavy enemy fire, he was hit 5 times and won 5 Purple Hearts, plus the Medal of Honor.

Now, LULAC can show America that we recognize our brave servicemen and women in uniform, especially those who display the highest level of courage, even making the ultimate sacrifice --- giving their lives for their country.

Please help us by supporting the Campaign to Honor America’s Latino Military Heroes by renaming Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas after Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez.

LULAC was privileged to have received Roy among us on several special occasions and we were always moved by his humility and selflessness. I knew him and he spoke at our chorizo and menudo breakfast in Dallas. He never stopped thanking those fellow soldiers who were not able to return and reminded us Service to God and Country is our duty as Americans.

You and I --- todos juntos, let us salute Roy P. Benavidez, un fiel Amigo de LULAC. Let’s Rename Fort Hood to Fort Roy Benavides ! Call / email / mail your local congressman and our two Texas senators to support our efforts .

Hasta La Victoria!

Domingo Garcia
LULAC National President
