LULAC CONGRATULATES CLAUDIA SHEINBAUM AS THE FIRST WOMAN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF MEXICO
Nation's Largest and Oldest Latino Civil Rights Organization Says It Will Work with the New Administration When President Sheinbaum Takes Office on October 1
Washington, D.C. - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) proudly congratulates Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first female president of Mexico. Sheinbaum, an accomplished engineer and environmentalist, secured a resounding victory with 58% of the vote, marking a significant milestone for gender equality and representation in Mexico.
"This is a historic moment for Mexico, and we congratulate President Sheinbaum and look forward to working with her on issues impacting millions of Mexicans in the United States and on matters which impact the civil rights of our people in both countries," says Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. "In my meetings with her and with LULAC First Lady Dr. Elba Garcia, we found her open, engaging, and willing to listen and share her thoughts on moving forward. Mexicans are vital to the United States' economic future and our hemisphere's overall robust vibrancy. At the same time, we must consider environmental and scientific initiatives in the interest of our well-being today and for future generations. I look forward to building bridges with the Sheinbaum administration and having LULAC continue to be a voice and advocate for the Mexican diaspora in our country," says Garcia.
Sheinbaum's election is a victory for women and the Jewish community, as she becomes the first person of Jewish ancestry to hold Mexico's highest office. Her background as a climate scientist who contributed to the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore in 2007 highlights her dedication to addressing global environmental challenges.
"As a woman born in Mexico who has strong ties in my family to my mother country, I am extremely proud of President Sheinbaum's achievement. She will give voice to millions of women and others at a critical time in our history as neighbors of two countries linked by the past, the needs of the present, and the hopes for the future," says Dr. Elba Garcia, a businesswoman who serves as an elected County Commissioner in Dallas, Texas. President Sheinbaum's victory underscores the progress women have made in the political arena, particularly in a country that has grappled with gender-based violence and misogyny. Her tenure as the former mayor of Mexico City and her extensive work in environmental science positions her to address Mexico's pressing challenges, including economic issues and environmental sustainability.
