LULAC Iowa Calls For Rep. Steve King’s Immediate Resignation

DAVENPORT, IOWA – After many years of hateful, divisive and racist statements, Steve King has finally been officially reprimanded by our nation’s leaders. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of Iowa commends the bipartisan act by Congress condemning Representative Steve King, but say that’s not enough. LULAC Iowa wants King to resign immediately.

“We’ve heard his (King’s) hateful rhetoric and demonizing of immigrants, people of color – and especially Latinos – for nearly twenty years,” said Michael Reyes, LULAC of Iowa State Director. “His malicious behavior has been like a cancer, spreading hate and divisiveness across the state and our nation.”

LULAC Iowa leaders say the U.S. Congressman from Iowa’s fourth district has been allowed to push his racist agenda for too long. In 2002, as an Iowa state legislator, he was the chief sponsor of a hateful bill that supports the white supremacy ideology of “English Only”. The law passed in Iowa, eliminating the use of translation services in the publication of government documents – especially election information and candidate ballots. Elected leaders from both parties and a Democratic governor supported the appalling legislation which continues to divide Iowans.

LULAC Iowa is a nonpartisan organization; we will always take a stand against civil rights infringement. King’s ideology, racial rhetoric and anti-immigration statements have garnered national attention. His posturing has heightened prejudice against American citizens of Latino descent (including those who were born and raised in Iowa). Emboldened by his words, King’s followers continue to spread hate across our state.

Latinos have been a contributing part of Iowa’s population for over 150 years and have always been a component of America. We are doctors, nurses, educators, service members, policemen, firefighters, entrepreneurs and more. It is time to embrace our history and acknowledge the ongoing contributions of Latinos and the immigrant community – in Iowa and nationwide. We must understand that diversity is the fabric of America, it fuels our economy and strengthens our nation.”
