LULAC To Meet With White House On Behalf Of 58-Million Latinos

Nation’s Largest and Oldest Civil Rights Organization To Tell Administration: Open Up the Federal Government & Offer a Real Starting Point

Washington, DC - Domingo Garcia, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) said Wednesday he has agreed to accept an invitation to the White House for a face-to-face meeting with the Administration. He issued the following statement:

“Make no mistake about it, LULAC is meeting, first and foremost to demand that federal workers be allowed to get back to their jobs. Also, we are not changing our position which we have consistently conveyed from our members and millions more Latinos. We support a long-term solution that offers a pathway for DACA and TPS recipients to one day be U.S. Citizens. Our children and loved ones are not bargaining chips to be bartered or exchanged when a threat is being made against them. We will not trade DACA recipients or TPS holders for bricks, mortar, steel or any other type of wall. We support border security that is smart and utilizes technology to prevent human, drug, and gun trafficking.”

Sindy M. Benavides, LULAC National CEO added, “LULAC is non-partisan and our message is clear: We stand with federal workers, DACA, and TPS recipients. We will not be used as pawns in the media crossfire. We will continue to work closely with our friends and allies on both sides of the aisle in Congress. We are going to speak honestly and honorably and expect the same from the White House. Only LULAC speaks for LULAC and no one else should attempt to characterize our visit or our position. We will continue to do what we have been doing for the last 90 years and that is to protect and defend our community.

The number one priority is to reopen the government and keep America safe by making sure that all our federal workers are paid and able to fulfill their jobs without worrying if they will be able to put the next meal on the table. They are invaluable to our country as are our DACA and TPS holders for now and the economic future of the United States.”

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the nation’s largest and oldest civil rights volunteer-based organization that empowers Hispanic Americans and builds strong Latino communities. Headquartered in Washington, DC, with 1,000 councils around the United States and Puerto Rico, LULAC’s programs, services and advocacy address the most important issues for Latinos, meeting critical needs of today and the future.
