They let their feet do the talking.

Members of the League of United Latin American Citizens on Tuesday kicked off the “Freedom Walks for Justice” campaign in Corpus Christi.

Demonstrators walked from the Corpus Christi Cathedral on Upper Broadway to Corpus Christi City Hall on Leopard Street, to encourage residents to register to vote for upcoming elections

Inspired by the Freedom Riders and their civil rights efforts in 1961, LULAC's Freedom Walks aim to promote greater civic engagement through voting.

The walk in Corpus Christi was just one of dozens of similar demonstrations that are scheduled elsewhere around the country. Other walks are slated to take place later this week in San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and Houston.

LULAC shares deep ties to the Coastal Bend.

Originally named the United Latin American Citizens, LULAC was founded in 1929 in Corpus Christi and is the oldest and largest continually active Latino political association in the United States.

Today, it has roughly 115,000 members, and operates five councils in Corpus Christi.
