LULAC Says Texas Governor's Planned Actions Waste Taxpayer Dollars And Are Likely Illegal

Nation’s Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Denounces Border Wall and Warnings to Arrest Migrants

Washington, DC - Domingo Garcia, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) issued the following statement after Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Thursday, unveiled his “Comprehensive Border Security Plan To Crack Down On Unlawful Border Crossings”.

“Governor Abbott stated that he intends to use Texas state budget dollars, not for education, improving our electric grid, or for Texas roads and highways. Instead, he says he will continue to build a wall and other barriers along the border with Mexico. This is a huge waste of taxpayer money, and very likely illegal. Equally disturbing are his plans to arrest migrants at the border, even as they arrive seeking political asylum or refugees who are fleeing desperate conditions in their home countries. His proposed actions are inhumane.

LULAC is considering filing an injunction against Governor Abbott for his abuse of power, and using refugee children as political piñatas to cynically launch his run for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Threatening to arrest children and families for legally requesting asylum plays into the very hands of human traffickers, creating even more misery and criminal abuse at the border. The people of Texas are better than that and deserve a governor who reflects their values, not someone with heartless disregard for those who are suffering.”
