Health disparities in the Latino community, including access, quality of service, and the burden of preventable chronic illnesses are rampant. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. It is the fifth leading cause of death among Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. Persons with diabetes have a higher risk for secondary health conditions, including coronary heart disease, blindness, kidney disease, peripheral vascular disease and amputations. The most common form of diabetes in the Latino community is type 2 diabetes. With type 2 diabetes, one’s body doesn't use insulin properly. And while some people can control their blood sugar levels with healthy eating and exercise, others may need medication or insulin to manage it. There is a common misconception that diabetes is caused by lifestyle factors including consumption of foods with sugar. While this is a strong factor, diabetes can also be caused by genetic and environmental factors.
