We didn't break any laws': Latino civil rights group demands investigation into Ken Paxton voter fraud chase
"It is evident through his (Paxton's) patterns of lawsuits, raids, searches and seizures that he is trying to keep Latinos from voting," Roman Palomares, the national president of LULAC, said during the news conference. "LULAC will not stand idly by and allow our members to be to be targeted, harassed, bullied or intimidated."
“Attorney General Paxton is using his position of authority to harass and intimidate Latino nonprofit organizations, Latino leaders, and LULAC members,” Palomares said. “This is point-blank voter intimidation, and LULAC will fight for the right of very Latino to exercise their right to vote.”
"In a news conference outside Paxton’s office Monday, LULAC’s national president accused the attorney general of seeking to “harass and intimidate Latino nonprofit organizations, Latino leaders and LULAC members” with an aim to “suppress the Latino vote.”
“They’re trying to intimidate our folks that are out registering people,” said Lulac’s president, Roman Palomares. “What they’re trying to do is they’re trying to intimidate, and then that has repercussions down the line here, where folks read about that and they go, ‘God, I mean, if they’re doing that to her and I’m a registrar, God, how are they going to go after me?’”
"These actions echo a troubling history of voter suppression and intimidation that has long targeted both Black and Latino communities, particularly in states like Texas, where demographic changes have increasingly shifted the political landscape," LULAC CEO Juan Proaño and the group's national president, Roman Palomares, said in the letter.
Texas, along with other mostly Republican-controlled states, passed a raft of new voting restrictions after President Biden beat former President Trump in the 2020 election, which saw a 50-year record turnout and a surge in mail-in and early ballots. Several local jurisdictions, including Harris County, Texas’s most populous county, had adopted new access measures during that election cycle in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
